受肉した神の働きは二つの部分から成る。最初に神が肉となった時、人々はそのこと知りも信じもせず、イエスを十字架につけた。二度目も、人々は神を信じないで、まして、知りもせず、またしてもキリストを十字架につけた。人間は神の敵ではないだろうか。もし人間が神を知らないのなら、どうして神の親しい友となれようか。また、どうして神を証しする資格を得られよう。神を愛し、神に仕え、神に栄光を捧げるとは言うが──それは人を欺く嘘ではないのか。もしそのような非現実的で実際の役に立たないことに自分の人生を捧げるなら、それは虚しい努力ではないか。
